About Us

Learn more about our church, history and team.

At Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, we believe faith is lived through service. We seek to be God’s hands and heart in our community by caring for our neighbors, supporting families, and responding to practical needs with compassion and love.

Our ministries include visiting those who are sick, homebound, or living in care facilities; providing food assistance through our food pantry; helping with transportation to medical appointments; and offering support to individuals and families facing financial hardship.

We are also committed to strengthening our community through youth programs, educational opportunities, Vacation Bible School, summer activities, and participation in local events that promote unity, justice, and civic engagement. From community celebrations and service projects to partnerships with local organizations, we strive to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.

We believe the church is called not only to gather for worship, but also to serve, uplift, and walk alongside others in love.

Delighting in God’s Love; Engaging in God’s Purpose

To be a welcoming and Christ-centered community where all people belong, faith flourishes, lives are transformed, and God’s love shines beyond our walls into the world.

Welcome to Mt. Zion United Church of Christ, where we are Delighting in God’s Love; Engaging in God’s Purpose. At Mt. Zion, you’ll find a Christ-centered community where worship is joyful, faith is nurtured, and every person is valued. Through meaningful worship, compassionate service, and authentic relationships, we seek to grow together in faith and share God’s love with our community and the world.

Founded in 1894, Mt. Zion United Church of Christ has been a place of worship, fellowship, and service for more than 130 years. Organized under the leadership of Rev. Thomas Brown and a faithful group of believers from the Rockingham community, Mt. Zion began with a simple vision: to worship God, proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and serve others with love and compassion.

Through the generations, the congregation has grown both spiritually and physically. From its earliest wooden structures to the sanctuary that continues to serve worshippers today, Mt. Zion’s story is one of faith, sacrifice, and perseverance. Many members contributed their time, talents, and resources to build and strengthen the church, creating a lasting legacy for future generations.

In 1957, the congregation celebrated worship in its present sanctuary, and in 1968 Mt. Zion entered full-time pastoral ministry. Over the years, additional facilities, educational spaces, fellowship areas, and ministry programs have expanded the church’s ability to serve both congregation and community.

Guided by dedicated pastors and faithful lay leaders, Mt. Zion has remained committed to Christian discipleship, community engagement, and compassionate service. The church has nurtured children and youth, supported families in times of need, cared for the sick and homebound, and partnered with organizations throughout Richmond County to meet the needs of the wider community.

As a congregation of the United Church of Christ, Mt. Zion embraces the belief that “God is still speaking.” Rooted in faith and empowered by the Holy Spirit, we seek to be a welcoming congregation where people can grow spiritually, serve generously, and experience the love of Christ.

Today, Mt. Zion United Church of Christ continues to live out its mission: Delighting in God’s Love. Engaging in God’s Purpose. As we honor our past, we remain committed to building a future marked by worship, fellowship, outreach, education, and faithful service to God and our neighbors.
